Cinematic artwork
The sense of urban isolation in Edward Hopper’s ‘Nighthawks’ infiltrates ‘Pennies from Heaven’ by Herbert Ross. The film’s lonely diner scene directly mirrors Hopper’s painting, creating a cinematic moment where life imitates art in its loneliest form.
From classical paintings to movies, visual storytelling is an energetic vehicle for storytelling, which binds all arts. With historical paintings in a movie, a director, aside from expressing respect for master painters of a past time, in doing so, provides new levels of interpretation for current viewers. For its beauty, richness of storytelling, or for its symbolic attractiveness, famous paintings continue making a contribution towards a movie experience, making storytelling part of it generation by generation.

It is one of my favourite paintings by Theo Michael and personally, I see the characters at play by the scene of some grizzly crime, taking pictures, and gathering information amongst themselves. But, it could just as easily be anything you imagine, such is the beauty of Theo’s painting and what is left unsaid.
Agnès Godard, who has lensed some of the most beautiful films of the past few decades, including Jacquot de Nantes (1991) and Beau Travail (1999), rarely alludes to specific painters or paintings. In one of her most recent efforts, Let the Sunshine In (2017), she made an exception. The main character, played by Juliette Binoche, paints large, Abstract Expressionist works, and over the course of the film, Godard shows her hard at work, fanning colors across huge canvases laid flat on the floor.

This visual drama channels Caravaggio’s tempestuous style that captivated then shocked 17th-century audiences, influencing generations of artists despite his notoriously volatile life cut short mid-career. Partly for suspected homosexuality, Basket of Fruit marked Caravaggio’s last public commission. As with his genre-defining Biblical scenes, it brims with layered meaning.
The painting’s notoriety is in part due to the strong historical and cultural significance that it holds. The Last Supper is a significant representation of the Christian faith, depicting a key moment in the life of Jesus Christ. The painting’s fame has also been aided by its popularity in various forms of popular media over the years.
We have gone through the list of all the important paintings and listed what we see as the 10 most important ones. Many on this list are very famous as the Mona Lisa. Others include one of my favorite American paintings of the American Gothic. Read on as we explore what we see as ten of these most essential paintings ever created.
